What should I expect when living with a host?
Living with a host family means becoming part of a real household and experiencing daily life in the United States firsthand. You will be welcomed as a member of the family while also being expected to respect the home, the people who live there, and the house rules. Homestay life is a balance of independence and shared responsibility.
As a student, you can expect to:
-
Share common spaces such as the kitchen, living room, and dining areas, and help keep these spaces clean and respectful for everyone.
-
Share some meals with your host family, depending on your meal plan. Mealtimes are often a great opportunity to practice English, ask questions, and connect with your hosts.
-
Learn about American culture and daily routines, including schedules, customs, holidays, and household habits that may be different from your own.
-
Communicate openly and respectfully with your host family—asking questions, sharing concerns, and letting them know your needs helps create a positive experience for everyone.
Every host family and home is unique, with its own routines, traditions, and expectations. However, all SRS hosts are carefully selected, trained, and committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment. Your host family is there to help you feel comfortable, adjust to life in a new country, and succeed both academically and personally during your stay.
